About

MaverickType is an independent type foundry in Buenos Aires, run by Nikita Kanarev. I handle every stage myself: drawing, spacing, variable font engineering, mastering and distribution.

I treat a typeface as a system rather than a set of styles. Each family is built as a variable design space with its own axes, instances and rules, and described in structured data that drives the fonts. The same approach makes it possible to extend a family in scripts, weights or optical sizes without redrawing it from scratch.

The work covers three areas: variable fonts, Cyrillic, and the infrastructure that keeps large type families consistent and maintainable. Cyrillic is drawn together with Latin from the start and extends beyond Russian to Bulgarian and Serbian forms and to non-Slavic languages such as Kazakh, Tatar, Bashkir and Abkhaz.

Every stage is done in-house: drawing, spacing, engineering, mastering and distribution.
